The most common models we see across Newark homes are the Famco D-series cast-iron dampers (round and rectangular, sized by flue diameter) and the newer Famco Econo-Damper line with the lighter stamped frames. The Econo-Damper uses a riveted tag mounted on the frame side.

One thing to know about Famco specifically: the D-series linkage uses a 3/8-inch square drive pin on the handle side, but the Econo-Damper narrowed that pin to 5/16-inch in the early 2010s. That 1/16-inch difference means an old D-series handle will not drive a newer Econo linkage, even if everything else looks right. As for the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision, Famco’s OEM plates are fine castings, but the aftermarket US-made equivalents we use are cast from heavier stock and typically outlast a factory plate in a damp Newark flue by a couple of years. • Handle spins freely with no resistance at any position. The square drive pin has sheared or the clevis bracket has backed off the plate stud. The damper plate is now stuck in whatever position gravity left it, and you have no control over the air coming down the flue.
• Ash and cold air seep down the chimney even with the damper closed. The plate has warped along the leading edge, or the cast frame has developed a hairline crack from years of expansion. A warped plate sits cocked inside the track and leaves a gap wide enough to feel with your hand.
• You can hear the plate rattle when wind pushes down the flue. Loose linkage hardware or a worn pivot pin lets the plate flap. Left alone, the rattling eventually peens the pivot hole oversized and turns a minor tightening job into a full plate replacement.
• Black soot streaks build up above the firebox opening. Soot escaping past an improperly seated damper means exhaust is not routing the way it should. Whatever the underlying cause, that face-velocity soot is lingering in your living room and collecting on the smoke shelf far more than a healthy chimney would allow.
• The damper sticks in the open position and will not close, even with force. Attempting the old “elbow grease” approach teaches you why we tell people to stop using it once resistance shows up. A seized plate means the linkage or pivot has galled, and pressing harder just rounds off the square drive and doubles the cost of the repair.
